What is Tense?

Tense means time. Usually in grammars tense is defined as a verbal category relating the time of a narrated event to the time of the speech event.

How many types of Tenses are there?

There are  three types of Tenses. Present simple, past simple and future simple tense.These tenses are further divided into simple Tense , continuous Tense, Perfect Tense and Perfect continuous Tense.

Types of Tenses and their example. 

1:Simple present Tense

subject+ 1st form of verb+ object
Example:
  • I open the door.
  • I do not open the door. 
  • Do I open the door?
  • Do I not open the door? 

2:Simple past Tense

Subject + 2nd form of verb + object

Example:
  • We bought a book.
  • We did not buy a book.
  • Did we buy a book?
  • Did we not buy a book?

3: Simple Future Tense

 Subject+will/shall+1st form of verb+object

Example:
  • He will go to London.
  • He will not go to London.
  • Will he go to London?
  • Will he not go to London?

4:  Present continuous Tense

Subject+Is/am/are+4/Ing form of verb +object 

Example:
  • He is cutting a tree.
  • He is not cutting a tree 
  • Is he cutting a tree?
  • Is he not cutting a tree? 

  • They are cutting a tree. 
  • They are not cutting a tree.
  • Are they cutting a tree?
  • Are they not cutting a tree?

5: Past continuous Tense

Subject+was/were+4/ing form of verb + object
Example:
  • I was playing cards.
  • I was not playing cards.
  • Was I playing cards?
  • Was I not playing cards?

  • We were planning for next week.
  • We were not planning for next week.
  • Were we planning for next week?
  • Were we not planning for next week? 

6: Future continuous Tense

  1. Subject +will/shall be +ing form of verb+object
Example:
  • I shall be waiting for you. 
  • I shall not be waiting for you. 
  • Shall I be waiting for you?
  • Shall I not be waiting for you? 

7: Present perfect Tense

Subject+has/have+3rd form of verb+ object

Example:
  • She has cooked noodles.
  • She has not cooked noodles.
  • Has she cooked noodles?
  • Has she not cooked noodles?

8: Past perfect Tense

Subject+had+ 3rd form of verb +object
Example:
  • They had completed the survey.
  • They had not completed the survey.
  • Had they completed the survey?
  • Had they not completed the survey?

9: Future perfect Tense 

Subject+will/shall have+ 3rd form of verb+ object
Example:
  • They will have to get together. 
  • They will not have to get together.
  • Will they have to get together?
  • Will they not have to get together?
